Satellite internet service arrives, promising high-speed access for remote regions and boosting connectivity across the nation.
Starlink, Elon Musk's SpaceX satellite internet constellation, has received regulatory approval to operate in Bhutan. The Bhutan Information, Communication and Media Authority (BICMA) granted a license to Starlink Services Private Limited, paving the way for high-speed, low-latency internet access, especially crucial for remote and mountainous regions where traditional infrastructure struggles. BICMA's approval followed careful review of Starlink's FDI registration, local representation plans, and service quality/data privacy assurances. The license covers internet via user terminals, not satellite-to-mobile.
A key concern, local currency payments, is being addressed. BICMA has directed Starlink to enable Ngultrum payments. While integration of local systems is underway, Starlink services remain inactive. Its arrival is expected to improve access for individuals and businesses and stimulate competition among Bhutanese telecom providers like TashiCell. While a commercial launch date is pending, BICMA's approval is a major step towards greater digital connectivity in Bhutan.
The potential impact of Starlink's arrival extends beyond individual users. Improved connectivity can boost various sectors, including education, healthcare, and tourism. Remote schools and clinics can gain access to online resources and telemedicine, while tourism businesses can leverage better internet for bookings and communication. The increased competition in the telecom market is also likely to drive innovation and potentially lower internet costs for consumers in the long run. As Bhutan continues its journey towards digital transformation, Starlink's presence promises to play a significant role in bridging the digital divide and unlocking new opportunities for the nation.
